Inigo Montoya

Background/History: Inigo Montoya is one of the central characters of William Goldman's engaging fantasy The Princess Bride. The world's greatest fencer, he is obsessed with tracking down the six-fingered man who killed his father. The character presented below is a mixture of the book and movie versions, with emphasis placed on the former.

Inigo is the son of Domingo Montoya, who was one of the best swordmakers in the world. When Inigo was 10, Count Rugen (a.k.a. the six-fingered man) commissioned Domingo to make a sword to meet the peculiarities of his right hand. After a year of labor, Domingo had finished the blade. When it was presented to Count Rugen, the six-fingered man pronounced it to be a cheap and shoddy piece of work and refused to pay the promised price. Domingo then refused to give Rugen the sword, presenting it to Inigo instead. Rugen killed Domingo for insolence. Inigo, enraged by the death of his father then challenged Rugen, but lost (although even at this early age, Inigo showed a flash of his later greatness). Rugen let the boy live, but slashed each cheek as a lesson.

Afterwards, Inigo dedicated his life to the study of fencing. He traveled the world, seeking the best teachers there were. Eventually, he began challenging all the fencing masters he could find, perfecting his skill. It rapidly became apparent that Inigo had exceeded the ranking of Master, he was the only living fencing Wizard.

Unable to find anyone capable of truly challenging his skill and unable to find the six-fingered man, Inigo felling into depression and despair. Turning to the bottle, Inigo began to drown his sorrows in brandy and wine.

Hired by Vezzini the Sicilian to kidnap Buttercup, Princess of Guilder, Inigo was set on a course that would result in his finally meeting the six-fingered man. But, if you really want the full details, read the book (or see the movie); it's worth it!

Personality/Motivation: The hunt for Count Rugen (the six-fingered man) is the most important thing in Inigo's life (or was, it has been 20 years). If he discovers the Count's location, he will drop everything and seek his revenge. Inigo is also very overconfident. He started the duel with The Man in Black left-handed in order to prolong the fight and later states that he is capable of handling 10 armed men at once. If depressed, Inigo has a tendency to curl up with a bottle of wine as his answer to the world's problems. Getting sober again can be quite a task.

Quote: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Powers/Tactics: Inigo is a fantastic fencer. He is the best in the world, unmatched in skill since the death of the Corsican Wizard. He is quite capable of disposing of 4 armed and armored guards in a matter of moments, is adept with fighting with either his right or his left hand and can even fight in almost total darkness. Well traveled, Inigo has visited the major fencing centers of the world and is highly familiar with all styles of fencing.

Inigo is meant for heroic level games, but is rather powerful. Game Masters who desire to use/adapt him, should decide on a DEX level that allows his to fight effectively as well as setting his Skill Levels at a comfortable level. If a PC is supposed to be the world's greatest fencer, the GM should adjust Inigo so he is about equal. Or, Inigo can still be considered the World's Greatest, but the GM could adjust his stats to represent lack of practice as well as alcohol abuse. Oh, and if you want to make Inigo even more powerful, then give him at least 1d6 of Deadly Blow.

Appearance: Inigo is about 30, of medium height and thin, with longish black hair and a thin mustache. He dresses (at least in the movie version) in a white shirt, leather vest, leather breeks, and boots. His sword is a magnificent weapon, well crafted. The Man in Black states: "I have never seen it's equal."

Inigo's face is scared from the sword slashes he received as a boy. They start up under the eye and extend to the chin, forming a shallow "V" shape.
