Background/History: Appleseed Book Four has this to say about Briareos: "Originally a black from the Mediterranean, Briareos was used as a terrorist by the KGB while still a child. He sought political asylum in the U.S.A. after killing his unit's commander of operations...."
Born in 2096, Briareos first acted as a terrorist at the age of ten, and killed his commander two years later, fleeing Europe (I presume). He met Deunan Knute (see) in 2116, joining Carl Knute's (Deunan's father) Special Security Forces team. In 2122 Briareos was caught in an explosion planted by enemies he had made in his former KGB life,and underwent a full-body cyborg replacement. The next year he entered a rehab center and was upgraded to the new Hecatonchires cyborg system. War broke out a few years later, and Briareos and Deunan ended up fleeing to the ruins of "badside" where they were found by Hitomi, who was working on orders of the Olympus Central Management Bureau. Returning with Hitomi to Olympus, Briareos and Deunan joined ESWAT, the Olympus antiterrorist military arm. Briareos has been part of ESWAT ever since.
Personality/Motivation: It's hard to hang an exact personality on Briareos. Unlike Deunan, he doesn't have large, glaring personality quirks that make it easy to assign a Psychological Limitation to. His quote (below) seems to sum up his attitude fairly well, which is one of practicality. He does what is needed to get the job done, without grandstanding or rash moves (unlike Deunan). Of course, the fact that he cares deeply for Deunan can get him in trouble, hence the Psychological Limitation. In addition, Briareos is fairly even tempered, and hard to anger (or even irritate), and in a game should be the voice of reason and rationality.
Quote: "We're not terrorists. ... Maybe it wasn't the best choice, but you can't turn back the clock now."
Powers/Tactics: First and foremost, Briareos is a cyborg, which means somewhere in excess of 75% of his body is mechanical (I'm betting it's closer to 90%). This means he is very strong (one scene shows him lifting and carrying a 1.5 ton GUGES mecha), fairly fast, very tough, and very durable (Briareos states at one point "It'll take more than a 9mm to stop me." [Note, however, his full-body bullet proofing does have gaps, hence the Activation Roll]). Cybernetic legs and boosters allow him to leap prodigious distances, although his mass makes swimming impossible.
Briareos also has a few specialized cybernetic systems. One is a series of single-shot guns built into his right arm. There are five barrels (hence the five-shot limitation) and all can be fired at once (thus "Autofire"). This system isn't very accurate however. Briareos's other specialized system is his sensor array. "Rabbit ears" atop his head contain small cameras that allow him to look around corners or through narrow gaps while keeping the rest of his body out of sight. This was bought as a form of Clairsentience, as Clairsentience allows one to use their perception from a remote point. Since Briareos has "No Range" on his Clairsentience, the remote point is only a few feet from his body. I used this instead of "Ranged" on his sight, as "Ranged" seems to allow one to use a sense at a distance, which sight is already capable of. The camera can be seen and damaged.
The rest of Briareos's extensive skill list is based off of sequences from the Appleseed manga, as well as logical projections of what someone who has undergone terrorist and police training would know.
Appearance: Before his accident, Briareos was a handsome black man with short black hair and dark eyes. As a cyborg, he's about seven feet tall, with a humanoid physique, and dark brown/bronze "skin." His face has four eyes, and what looks like a central eye (but is actually a respiration grill), and two rabbit ear-like sensory antenna.
Designer's Notes: Most of Briareos's origin notes were taken from the Appleseed Databook, with additional material from Appleseed Book 4. His DEX and SPD are based on the fact he's pretty quick as a cyborg, and that he has an auxiliary brain helping him process information (hence his 5 SPD). His STR was tough, as Shirow tries to keep things fairly "real" in Appleseed. Still, he is seen lifting and leaping while carrying Deunan in her GUGES Landmate, which is said to be "Under 1.5 tons." So a 35 seemed about right. I added the dice of HA to simulate his armored limbs and the power his body gives him when punching or kicking.
