Background/History: Artemis-Alpeia is a custom hybrid (apparently human/feline genetic mix) combat bioroid (a form of synthetic human). Such details as who built her and why are not given in Appleseed, and the Appleseed Databook only states she was created (with regards to the story) to suggest the existence of technology being used to manufacture new types of plant and animal life around the world.
When first encountered, Artemis is running loose in what is left of war-torn New York City, sleeping in a ruined building, and eating wild dogs and people. She is captured and brought back to Olympus, but wakes up en-route, severely beating the capture crew, and trashing the transport ship to such an extent it crashes, so she can make her escape. Eventually, she is tracked to an Olympus open space, where she is surviving by hunting fish and small game. There she is recaptured, and subjected to an assortment of tests and examinations before being returned to more normal Olympus society.
At some point (the mythical Appleseed Vol. 5?) Artemis moves in with Hitomi (another bioroid and part of the Olympus legislature), and produces three offspring (Artemis-Hecate, Artemis-Selene, and Artemis-Telon)
Personality/Motivation: It is difficult to assign a personality to Artemis as she doesn't talk, and thus doesn't express vocal opinions and feelings. However, based on her actions in Appleseed Vol. 3, one can hazard a few guesses. The first is Artemis wants to be free, or more accurately, doesn't want to be confined/enslaved. The second is that in order to defend her freedom, she is fairly ruthless in combat, and will any and all means in order to remain free and/or defeat an enemy. However, after moving in with Hitomi, Artemis relaxes somewhat and isn't quite so unpleasant to be around.
Quote: (None, cannot speak)
Powers/Tactics: Since she is a combat bioroid model, Artemis is very strong and very fast. She is also very agile. She virtually destroys a five (or six) man recovery team in hand-to-hand combat, and later on manages to escape from Briareos through sheer speed and leaping ability (although her being armed helped). An excellent demonstration of her speed, strength, and agility comes during this chase, where Artemis ams herself by leaping onto a speeding car, reaching in through an open window and stealing a police officer's handgun and shoulder holster (and then leaping away).
Artemis also demonstrates proficiency with hand-to-hand combat, as well as such survival skills as building traps and being able to hunt for fish with a homemade bow and arrows. She has also shown the ability to use an assortment of firearms, and is quite capable of defending herself in a wide variety of situations.
It is stated by Hitomi in Appleseed Book 3 that Artemis can change the color of her fur to protect against ultraviolet radiation, and can adjust the length of her hair to maintain a proper body temperature. She will also age five times the normal rate if denied a life-extension treatment. Finally, Artemis can reproduce via parthenogenesis!
Appearance: Artemis stands about 5'5" tall, and probably weighs around 130 lbs. She is fairly humanoid in appearance, with numerous secondary feline characteristics, including long tapering, catlike ears, vertical pupils (Hitomi says "...she's got cat eyes and ears like a mule deer..."), claws, fangs, a flat, cat's nose, and thick patches of fur on various points of the body. Her mane and hair is brownish, with a tawny body.
Designer's Notes: The write-up here is an attempt to quantify Artemis's incredible physical abilities in HERO System terms. I'm not sure how true to the source material it is, mainly as I have not sure of such hard facts as "How far can she jump?" or "How much can she lift?" Her current leaping levels allow her to do a maximum jump of 130 feet, which seems about right. Her Strength is open to debate. Although she is seen to rip a whole section of cable and piping out of the side of a transport craft and use it as a club, it was mounted in an aircraft, not a surface vessel, so it might not have been as solid or heavy. Note however, she also breaks a fair number of bones in one of her targets with just a few blows, so...
Other possible powers for Artemis include some sort of ability to heal wounds. If she can reproduce via parthenogenesis (i.e. "budding"), it would only seem logical she can re-grow lost tissue. Her Life Support is not documented in Appleseed, but was added by me as a logical power.
