Ayna Tedora

Background/History:  As the capital of the Empire of Dananthand, the city of Tyravas is a shining example of the might and majesty of Dananthand and its people. Along with numerous ornate and ostentatious temples in the Priest’s Quarter, there is also not one, but four different universities to be found in the Scholar’s Quarter, as well as such locations as the Street of Smiths (where one can find workers in precious metals of all kinds), Caravan Crossway (where traders from across the known world display their wares), and towards the center of Tyravas, near the walls of the Imperial Palace, one can find the Royal Library of Dananthand, a massive edifice dedicated to collecting, storing, and archiving all of the knowledge the world has to offer.

Ayna Tedora is one of a small army of people who work at the Royal Library. Like many of her fellow librarians, she’s an archivist, charged with maintaining the stacks and ensuring everything is cataloged. Ayna, who’s had a great love of books for as long she can remember, feels especially blessed. Not only does her job pay her to work with and maintain books, she’s been assigned to the mystic and occult lore shelves! Bestiaries, histories, spellbooks, and the like are all there, just begging to be read. And so, between archiving, cataloging, organizing, restoration, and repair, Ayna takes time to actually peruse the folios under her care. Naturally, considering her curiosity and enthusiasm, it didn’t take her long to actually try and cast a spell or two. And much to her delight, the spells worked! At that point, Ayna was hooked. Using (and perhaps abusing) her librarian privileges, she borrowed books, reading and studying them from cover to cover, returning them only if she felt she’d mastered the lessons therein. In time she became quite the accomplished self-taught magician with the potential to become quite the powerful wizardress. But for now, she’s content to stay where she is, surrounded by all the magical texts she could ever need.

Personality/Motivation:  Ayna is quite the bookworm and is especially attracted to volumes detailing magic, magical theory, and magical creatures, constructs, and customs. While a capable and responsible employee, she does harbor a certain desire for adventure (despite having little to no idea what an ‘adventure’ would entail.) This had led her to live a double life or sorts, where she’s a responsible librarian by day but at night goes out looking for material components and materials in order to perfect the spells she does know as well as learn new ones. She also invests in large amount of ink and blank books, as she does her best to copy all of the interesting passages out of the books she’s borrowed before she returns them. Ayna also likes to talk to anyone who comes into the Department of Mystic and Occult lore and might just inadvertently make a pest of herself in an effort to learn more about a new spell or style of magic.

Quote:  “Ohhh… I don’ think I’ve read this one yet.”

Powers/Tactics:  Although a fairly potent sorceress (Ayna knows a fairly large number of spells), her control lacks. Thus, she tends to take a lot of extra time to cast more powerful spells, and often uses a lot of props and other artifacts designed to make the channeling of magical energy easier (in game terms, GMs may want to give her bonuses to her Power Skill if she uses things like wands, magic circles, candles, and the like when spell casting). Most of her spells were learned because either Ayna found them potentially useful on the job (Mending and Read Script for example) or she found them useful for learning new spells (such as Harness Natural Power, Spell Augmentation, and Wizard’s Scribe.) Almost none of her spells have much in the way of combat effects and Ayna would be more inclined to flee a fight then try to participate in it (unless her precious books were threatened).

Appearance:  For all intents and purposes, Ayna defines the tropes of “hot librarian” (and knows it.) She’s young, attractively proportioned, and wears her lavender hair long to accent her bright green eyes. Her glasses, usually perched on the tip of her nose, only add to the allure. She likes to dress in the latest fashions, which recently have gone from merely daring to downright scandalous (Ayna, for some strange reason also thinks this is how adventuring sorceresses dress). On the other hand, her tendency to display a wealth of décolletage along with a great deal of leg, has done wonders for her ability to wheedle favors from researchers, scribes, and wizards browsing the library’s stacks.

Designer's Notes:  Ayna is meant to be a highly useful Contact for PCs involved in a fairly high-magic campaign. She knows quite a lot and can find out even more, provided she’s given enough time and has access to the Royal Library (if at home, give her only +2 with Intellect Skills). She also knows a useful suite of spells, and if time isn’t of the essence can cast them with little trouble. Thus, PCs who need something opened, investigated, or translated could do worse than to call upon Ayna. All she’ll ask for in return is a new bit of knowledge, a new spell, and previously unread book, or unused material components.

To make Ayna more powerful, up her Characteristics as needed to allow her to be of more use in combat. Also increase her Power Skills so she can cast spells without taking extra time and give her some damage-dealing spells (Mystic Bolt and Mystic Dart are a good start). To make her less powerful, reduce all of her Power Skills to 10- and remove spells as needed.
