Ecology: Spider-bears are native to the Auriga system where they are the largest known land predators. Solitary creatures, they only gather into large groups during mating season, after which pregnant females will isolate themselves in secluded dens to lay their eggs and watch over the newly hatched young. Active day and night, spider-bears are known to be highly aggressive and treat just about anything they encounter as a possible and/or probable food item. Reports have them going to far as to attempt to attack armored ATVs, apparently seeing them as just another herbivore.
Personality/Motivation: Typical animal motivations.
Powers/Tactics: A spider-bear is an ambush predator, lying in wait in thick stands of growth near watering holes and game trails. Very fast over short distances, a spider-bear will often attempt to bowl over its quarry (a Move-By or Move-Through) before turning around to deliver a bite and inject a deadly dose of venom. Struggling prey will usually be pinned with a paw or two, with the aim to hold the target still before the bite is delivered. As they are apex predators, spider-bears don't scare easily and tend to not run from an encounter.
Appearance: Spider-bears are massive, quadruped mammalian predators. They stand a good five feet at the shoulder and normally weigh around 800 pounds, with weights of 1,000 pounds or better not uncommon. Thick dark brown hair covers their bodies, while a scattering a glossy black eyes dot the front of the head. Two large fangs jut from the mouth and are used to deliver highly lethal doses of venom to their prey.
Designer's Notes: This creature design was inspired by a photo-manipulation I found. I simply spliced together a character sheet for a Bear with a Giant Spider (both found in the HERO System Bestiary), made a few adjustments, and then added in the color text. I made the creature a science fictional one, as I felt that fantasy chimeric creatures have been done to death and are too easy to develop a backstory for. By making it a science fiction "alien" I'd like to think it made the Spider-Bear a little more memorable and interesting.
One can easily adjust the Spider-Bear to meet different needs. Adding in different Creature Templates will get you animals found in different environments. Possible Templates include "Aquatic," "Ferocious," "Smart," or "Winter."
