Background/History: When the Kei Pirates and certain elements of the Space Forces banded together to build the XGP 15A-11 (a.k.a. the Outlaw Star), they also designed a unique control system for the galaxy's fastest and most advanced starship. This control system was Melfina USD02C, a bio-android who looks (and acts) very much like a highly attractive young woman. She was made by Professor Gwen Khan, who also included some 30,000 year-old technology in her make-up, technology that also makes Melfina a "key" for accessing the Galactic Leyline. However, this ability is hidden, and can only be accessed (and turned off) through specific activation and shutdown phrases (which I forgot to note down... sorry).
Melfina first appears at the very end of Episode 1, Outlaw World, where she shows up as a nude woman curled up in a carrying case (and in suspended animation to boot). She's activated in Episode 2, Star Of Desire, and ends up working with Gene, Jim, and the rest all the way to the end. It is in Episode 4, When The Hot Ice Melts, that Melfina is informed of her true purpose, which is the be the control system for the XGP 15A-11.
Personality/Motivation: Melfina knows nothing about herself. She has no memories from before her activation, and really has no idea who she is or why she was made. She often questions her usefulness to the team, and at times feels to be a burden to the rest of the crew. Her main desire is to find out why she exists and what purpose she has in life. She sticks close to Gene because he promised to help her discover her origins and because she feels attracted to the roguish Outlaw.
Quotes: "I... I don't even understand myself."
"I'm me. That's all I need."
"Why did I have to be born?"
Powers/Tactics: Melfina's primary power is her ability to run the Outlaw Star all by herself. In fact, she's required to run the ship, and unless she's onboard and in her glass navigation tank, the Outlaw Star isn't going anywhere. The navigation tank normally sits recessed in the floor of the Outlaw Star's bridge, accessed via a hatch in the floor. Melfina opens the hatch and drops down into the tank, at which point it rises out of the floor. Melfina is now inside (nude), and fully immersed in what looks like some sort of fluid (No, I have no idea where her clothing goes...). Within this tank she can plot the Star's course, pilot the ship while Gene runs the Grappler Arms, and generally handle most support systems. One could put the OIF (Immobile Navigation Tank; - 1 1/2) Limitation on the following skills if so desired, to further represent how dedicated her systems are: Combat Piloting, Navigation (Space), and Systems Operation.
Melfina has other abilities besides being the control system for the Outlaw Star. As an android, she doesn't seem to age or get sick (Not exactly demonstrated in the series, but it makes sense considering her intended use.). Her brain allows her to accurately determine time and to rapidly calculate numbers, thus allowing for her impressive navigation abilities. This same brain is also virtually immune to Mind Control, as seen in Episode 13, Advance Guard From An Alien World. She can also detect various forms of "energy waves," although the exact nature of these waves is never specified.
Finally, Melfina demonstrates a rather interesting power in Episode 7 and 8, Creeping Evil and Forced Departure. After Gene is hit with a poisoned needle, she takes him into her navigation tank, and purges his body of the poison, healing his wound as well.
Appearance: Melfina stands 5'2" and weighs 132 lbs. She doesn't look that "heavy," and has a fairly perfect (if narrow-waisted) figure. Physically she appears to be around 18, but is actually only about two years old (if that). She has shoulder-length black hair, large brown eyes, and attractive features. She normally wears a white blouse, a blue tie, a short black skirt and suspenders, purple hose, low black shoes, and a gold ring around her left ankle. Over this goes a blue cloak/shawl. She also has an "S"-shaped dragon tattoo on her left buttock—the mark of the Kei Pirates.
Designer's Notes: Melfina is a tough character to build in some ways. Mainly because I was unsure of what she actually did, and then has to decide how to express that in points. I finally decided to treat her as an A.I. of sorts, giving her various skills to allow her to pilot a spaceship all by herself (As far as I can tell, you really don't need anyone but her to run the Outlaw Star, provided you don't plan on getting in to any fights.). Thus, she's far more important then her point total indicates.
