Background/History: Battia Bureitin Rou is a loyal Officer First Class of the Santovasku Empire. She has served as Kahm's guardian for a long time, and has rescued the impetuous princess from any number of troublesome situations (as well as hauling Kahm back to the Imperial Planet every time she decided to run away.). In fact, she initially arrives at Earth with the express intent of returning Kahm to the Imperial Planet, as the princess has run away once again in order to see the "Sacred Planet" (i.e. Earth).
Battia ends up almost instantly in trouble, as her battlecruiser is destroyed by Earth forces and she ends up vaporizing the islands of Japan. As no one was supposed to mar the scared planet, this results in Battia being sentenced to serving as a common footsoldier for the rest of her (presumably much shorter) life.
Her sentence doesn't last long, however. Geobaldi shows up and Battia is placed under his command. During this time Kahm and Tetsuya hatch their plan to stop the war, and Battia, who's life is virtually forfeit already, decides to join in with them. She fights both in the fleet action (commanding her own battlecruiser), and later on assists in the attack on the Imperial Planet. She is killed there by Imperial soldiers, an act that drives Geobaldi into a destructive rage.
Personality/Motivation: Initially, Battia is loyal to the Empire, and is a faithful soldier. She is fairly even tempered, unless she's drunk, in which case her disposition is terrible. She is fairly protective of Kahm, and usually tries to get Kahm to do the "right" thing (right being defined as "what's best for the Empire"). However, Battia does end up supporting Kahm and Tetsuya's marriage, mainly due to the fact that it so obviously makes Kahm happy.
Battia is a tough woman, who isn't one to take abuse from others. She is also a powerful and confident fighter, and doesn't shirk from danger. She is the most levelheaded and logical of the three main Santovasku rebels (i.e. herself, Geobaldi, and Kahm).
Quote: "You're all ten years too young to play games with me, boys!"
"For as long as I can remember, it's always been my job to haul Kahm's rear out of trouble."
Powers/Tactics: Battia's primary prowess is with the sword. She is an accomplished swordswoman, and is shown carving her way through units of Imperial guardsmen in several scenes. She is a capable ship commander, and does reasonably well in fleet combats. She is also an "esper," which means she posses mental powers of an unspecified nature. She is never seen using any of the classical esper powers common to most manga and anime (such as Force Fields, Force Walls, Flight, Telekinesis, or Teleportation), but instead seems to be highly sensitive to mental "signatures." She detects the sorceress Jihler's overwhelming power simply by walking past her, and in several scenes is able to detect the movement of men and ships (which are living constructs) without being able to actually see them.
Appearance: Battia is fairly tall, and probably stands about 6 feet in height. She has a slender athletic build, but is still strong enough to cut a man in two with a single blow from her sword. Battia has black hair which falls down to either her mid-back or her waist (depends on how far along the series is), topped by two small cat's ears. She dresses in costumes similar to Kahm's, i.e. "space armor" that exposes a lot of thigh and cleavage. Battia normally adds a cloak and a sword to complete her uniform.
Designer's Notes: Battia's esper powers drove me nuts. She states in one panel that she is an "esper," and tells us that she is responsible for generating the null-field that makes the Santovasku ships invulnerable (actually, not her specifically, but the ships tap into the psyche of the ship commander in order to create the field). She can detect others by their minds alone and uses this ability almost like Danger Sense. I tried to replicate these powers as best I could, but am not totally satisfied with the result (on the other hand, I don't really have a better suggestion...).
As written, Battia makes for an excellent alien "sidekick" character so common to the space opera genre. She is strong, smart, skilled, sexy, and quite capable of taking care of herself.
