Background/History: Nathan Carpenter grew up a devout Christian. He joined the US Army as a combat engineer and served during a Middle East conflict. He suffered a crisis of faith as he witnessed the meaningless death and suffering that occurs when mankind wars upon itself.

One day, the convoy he was traveling in was ambushed and destroyed. The attackers left him for dead, but although he was grievously injured, he was able to escape. Nathan wandered the desert in a delirious fog until he stumbled onto some ruins. He collapsed at the doorstep of what looked like a small shrine. He had a vision where he walked into the restored shrine, obviously of Christian origin, up to the altar, where a shining sword lay. He felt compelled to pick up the sword and, when his hand gripped the hilt, his mind was filled with a bright light that suffused him with knowledge and purpose.

The next thing Nathan knew, he was lying in a HumVee rattling down a road while a corpsman worked on him. Still gripped in his hand was the sword, now looking ordinary but quite serviceable. The corpsman told him how they had been surprised to find him stumbling down the road, using the sword to prop him up.

The Army gave Nathan a medical discharge and sent him home. Once back, Nathan worked to fully recover from his injuries and train himself to follow his new destiny. He started a one-man campaign against the fell creatures that hid in the shadows and preyed on the innocent and weak. It was during this time that he met and rescued a woman fighting for her life against such a monster. They fell in love and married, and have three kids.

A job offer prompted Nathan and his family to move to Angelus, where he came under the attention of the XSWAT commander during one of their missions. He persuaded Nathan to join the XSWAT and helped him go through the qualification process.

The Order of Enoch, upon learning of Nathan's existence, also offered him a place in their organization but he politely declined, wary of their narrow- minded worldview. His dismissal caused the Order to believe he was not worthy of wielding the sword, and are looking to divest him of it and use it to further their "glorious" undertakings. They have so far tried, and failed, to use legal means to take the sword away.

Personality/Motivation: Nathan is a man driven by his faith. It is the core of his strength and the driving force of his life. The only thing that can compare is his love for his wife and kids. He is no proselytizer, though; he believes his actions provide a better testimony than his words.

He follows what can be considered the classic code of chivalry, but is not blind to the ways of the world.

Nathan is open and cheerful to friends, polite and generous to strangers, and fearless and implacable to enemies.

Quote: "The Lord works in mysterious ways."

Powers/Tactics: Nathan has a few years experience as a monster-hunter that he brings into XSWAT. In addition, he's received the training necessary to qualify him as a member of the police force. He's trained in the use of his sword, and will usually depend on it more than his sidearm.

He has additional abilities associated with men of faith, such as healing and defense against evil. He doesn't depend on them, only calling them forth when the situation requires it.

Appearance: Nathan stands about 5'11", with an athletic physique that marks a man who works with his hands. His brown hair is long enough to reach the top of his collar, and he wears a trim beard. When not in uniform, he prefers casual wear, such as flannel shirts and jeans.
