Background/History: Yamcha is the fourth major character that we meet in Dragon Ball. A bandit, he initially wants to get the dragon balls to wish for a girlfriend (Or, to wish away his inability to speak to a pretty girl without gibbering like an idiot.). His origins can be traced back to the original tales of the Monkey King, who had a bandit disciple. His name is a food pun and refers top a type of dish (but I don't know what).
Yamcha's appears mainly in the first 16 or so volumes of Dragon Ball. After trying to steal the dragon balls from Bulma, he ends up helping Son Goku and company, fighting against Pilaf. After Pilaf is stopped from taking over the world, Yamcha goes to train with Kame-sennin, becoming one of his students. We see Yamcha off and on through the next few volumes. He looses to Jackie Chun in the first Tenkaichi Budoikai, fights against Tenshinhan in the second (and gets his leg broken), looses to Shen in the third, and ends up getting killed fighting the Cybermen when Vegita and Nappa arrive. After being brought back to life (via the dragon balls) Yamcha fades into the background. He is still seen when ever something big is going on (the arrival of Freezer on Earth, the fight with the Artificial Humans, the Cell Game), but he never has as big an impact any more. He is, by the way, the weakest Z-fighter (even at 503 points!).
Personality/Motivation: Yamcha's best friend (and constant companion) is the shape-shifting floating cat, Poolo. They care a lot for each other, and the times where Yamcha has been badly hurt, Poolo has been greatly broken up by fact—crying extensively as well as turning into a flying carpet in order to ferry Yamcha to the hospital.
At some point, Yamcha collected a number of facial scars. He changes hair styles almost as often as Bulma does, but his scarred features are unmistakable. As a side note, Yamcha used to be quite vain about his looks, panicking over a lost tooth. He also had a hard time dealing with women, turning into a total klutz around any pretty girl. Even after getting over the drooling idiot act, he seemed a bit less than sure of himself around other females. On the other hand, he did date Bulma for some time (it was a stormy relationship). Yamcha, like all the other Z-fighters, is a fighter, and a touch reckless. This has gotten him into trouble more than once.
Yamcha seems to be the whipping boy of the series. He is killed several times, severely wounded several more times, and is battered around in quite a few fights. His Unluck should represent the fact that he is often a little outmatched in his fights. He also used to be a rather famous bandit. Although this is never touched in the series, it does make sense for any sort of "game" use of the character.
Powers/Tactics: Yamcha has a whole host of chi powers, many of which are common to all characters in the series. He can fly, sense other's chi, move faster than the eye can follow (for short jumps), leap great distances, launch blasts of pure chi energy, is trained in the martial arts, and can use a wide variety of traditional and modern weapons.
Yamcha also has several "unique" chi attacks. The first is the Kamehameha. This is a powerful blast of chi energy—possibly the most powerful attack in the series. It was originally developed by Kame-sennin (It took him 50 years!) and is used by Yamcha, Son Goku, and Kulilin as well. The second is the "Shin-Rougafufuken," or "New Wolf Wind Attack," a rapid series of punches and kicks that land with great force. Finally, Yamcha has perfected the "Souki-Dan" or "Energy Bomb", a glowing ball of energy that Yamcha can direct to strike his target from any direction.
Appearance: Yamcha is of average height, with a strong, muscular build. He has tangled black hair, which has ranged from a shoulder-length mane to a buzz-cut. He has scars on his left cheek and across his right eye. Ever since becoming a student of Kame-sennin, Yamcha has taken to wearing the standard orange ghi of all Kamesennin-ryu fighters.
