Bulma

Background/History: Bulma (her name is a pun on "bloomers") is the second Dragonball character introduced. She is also the second longest running character, showing up in Volume 1 and lasting all the way to the end of the series. Initially, Bulma was looking for the 7 dragon balls to wish herself up a boyfriend. She then fell in love with Yamcha the bandit, and had a stormy on-again off-again relationship with him. After the battle with Freezer on the Namek planet, she married Vegita and bore him two children: Trunks—a boy, and Bra—a girl.

Bulma's whole family revolves around clothing puns. Her father is Dr. Briefs, her name is Bulma (or Buruma), and her children are Trunks and Bra.

Personality/Motivation: Bulma is an interesting character. She is a total "normal" in a world of super-strong chi-powered warriors who can destroy whole planets. Still, Bulma refuses to be left behind and often ends up in the middle of a number of encounters. Of course, she is also a touch stubborn, and is quite adamant about getting her way. On the other hand, demonstrations of massive destructive power are usually sufficient to convince her that her current plan may not be the best.

Deep down, Bulma does really love Vegita, although neither really shows it. The most telling dialogue to this effect is seen at the end of Volume 35, when Trunks returns home to the future. She also loves her son Trunks a great deal, and has an ongoing feud with Chi-Chi over which is the better fighter, Trunks or Goten (or, originally, Gohan). The "baby Trunks" listed above is the infant Trunks from before the Cell Game, not the young Trunks of Volumes 36 and beyond.

Powers/Tactics: Bulma has no real powers per se. She is very rich however (her father, Dr. Briefs owns Capsule Corporation), and very smart. She built the time machine Trunks uses to give Goku his heart medicine (and to warn him about the androids), she helped service and repair Kami-sama's spaceship, she repaired Raditz's scouter (in record time too), and made the Dragon Radar. She can also operate just about any vehicle going and is familiar with a wide variety of firearms as well.

Bulma's most important "power" is her access to Hoi Poi capsules. Within these small capsules she can keep food, weapons, protective gear, small houses, and almost any vehicle you can imagine. All one does to activate the capsule is hit the button on the capsule and toss it a short distance. With a loud "pop" the capsule will burst, releasing the gadget inside. Gadgets have included: a sword, guns, a refrigerator filled with sodas and beer, magazines and books, clothing, cars, bikes, planes, and several small homes.

Appearance: Bulma is of average height with a slim, attractive build. Her hair is a bluish color and comes in a wide variety of styles. Usually, it is straight and hangs to to her shoulders. Bulma has no set costume, and tends to wear clothing suitable to the occasion (jumpsuits, spacesuits, dresses, lab coats, and so on). Bulma is vain about her looks and likes to dress "nice."
