MICAHEL'S FICTION PAGE
GAMING FICTION
I don't claim to be a great writer, although I feel that I've written some pretty good stories from time to time. This page is an attempt to collect some of this material and present it for your reading pleasure. Now, instead of just tossing a hodgepodge of stories at you and expecting you to understand what is going on, I've decided to put a little more organization behind the idea. The stories below are all "gaming fiction." By that, I mean they were all written to go along with various Player Characters that I ran in an assortment of campaigns.
In my gaming group, players may, from time to time, feel the need to further illustrate certain aspects of their character with side stories. Sometimes these stories are co-operative, and are written by two (or more) people. Other times, the Game Master may moderate the interaction, going so far as to have the character roll dice for skill and combat results. I have found that e-mail is a great medium to spread stories such as these -- as well as introductions to upcoming adventures, vignettes of what is happening elsewhere, linking pieces that can be used to follow up on a run, or to just fill the space between runs. Over on the Kazei 5 page, you can find just a small fraction of the stories that were developed during the course of the game. The Shadows Angelus pages show how extensive this can get.
The stories included here all involve characters to be found on this website. I've tried to include stories that work well on their own, and don't require a great deal of campaign knowledge to understand. I have also included my comments for each story as well. Please, read on and enjoy. Note that all stories are presented in chronological order, with stories that occur earlier in the character's life presented first.
Clicking on the name of a character will take you to a character sheet for that particular character.
- CHRISTOPHER MASAKI JONES -- Also known as "Devil Hunter Jones," Christopher is a wild martial arts character who specializes in hunting down supernatural monsters. I ran him in a wild martial arts game called "Sons of the Phoenix", which was great fun while it lasted.
-
- Point of View -- This was Christopher's opening story sequence. I wanted to set up his general look, as well as draw a connection between his appearance, what people tended to think on first glance and his real mission. Of course, playing up the view point of the onlooking character didn't hurt.
- Memories -- A little bit of Christopher's history.
- ERIC VAI SHEPARD -- Eric is a gunman -- a killer -- run in a near-future game. He is meant to be calm and relaxed, and was inspired by the main characters from Grosse Point Blank and The Big Hit.
-
- A Short Pull of the Trigger -- Eric's origin story. A friend of mine called this "A damn good story...". Durant is the Game Master Non-Player Character who was the backer for the team in the game.
- KATHERINE "KITTEN" RAMIS -- Kitten is one of my favorite characters. Although she was never run as a Player Character, she was an important Non-Player Character in the Kazei 5 campaign. You can read several stories involving her on that page. The two stories below were written for a campaign that never occurred. I was going to be allowed to play Kitten as a Player Character and the wrote the two fiction pieces as a prelude for her appearance. As KItten is included in the Kazei 5 sourcebook from HERO Games, her character sheet doesn't appear on this website.
-
- The Invitation -- Kitten is invited to join the Player Character team. This story serves to set up her personality and some of her history.
- The Decision -- This story is meant to explain why Kitten decided to join the Player Character team. It also helps to further develop Kitten's personality, and allows her a chance to demonstrate her combat skills.
- KAYLI THE DESTROYER -- Kayli is a character from the now-defunct Crossover Earth '98 Play By E-Mail game. She is a Saiyajin warrior, an idea shamelessly swiped from the pages of Dragon Ball Z. Kayli was deliberately written to be totally "over the top" and her stories have a definite tongue-in-cheek feel. For starters, all Kayli stories had titles that were derived from Hong Kong action cinema. The stories also featured scads of in-jokes and other humor bits. Because of the nature of the character, fight scenes were common, and I often tried to write them as detailed as I could, striving to live up to the look and feel of the Dragon Ball Z manga or HK martial arts films. As Kayli is included in my Ninja Hero book for HERO Games, I have removed her character sheet on the website.
-
- Monkey in the Lone Star's Shadow -- Kayli's origin story. I will gleefully admit that the two police officers are included only to set up a single gag.
- Enter the Monkey -- The follow up to the story above. These two stories helped establish Kayli's attitude and personality, as well as get her set for actual game play.
- Full Contact -- This story was Kayli's first encounter with another Player Character. It was a lot of fun, had quite a few in-jokes and won 2nd (or 1st, I forget) place in the voting for the turn. This story was co-written with Nestor Rodriguez.
-
MEI SHIN LI -- Mei Shin also hails from the same "Sons of the Phoenix" game as Christopher Masaki Jones.
- Bodyshaping -- This was Mei Shin's first introduction to the game. Christopher is my character (of course), while Sun (loosely derived from Songoku -- the Monkey King) belonged to another player.
- Mei Shin Meets Garret Wang -- During the course of the game, Mei Shin became an assistant to Private Detective Garret Wang. She was supposed to slowly fall in love with him, but events didn't get that far. This little story bit was interesting in that the fight was actually run out via e-mail. This story was co-written with David Kuijt.
- MERRIYA DE BLACKMERE -- A 14th Century knight, Merriya has wandered in and out of several Fantasy Hero games, including a Play By E-Mail Dungeons and Dragons game.
-
- Merriya Loses Her Horse -- This little bit was written in an attempt to write a "proper" or realistic fantasy fight scene. Spawn is a generic term for orcs, goblins, and the like.
- Under the Walls of Arbino -- A reasonably realistic look at a medieval siege. I wrote this with another player in the Play By E-Mail game, and since the both of us are in the Society for Creative Anachronism, we strove for a certain degree of realism. All of the equipment and weapons are real, as are some of the tactics and other minor details. This story was co-written with David Kuijt.
- A Day in the Life -- A look at a typical 14th Century day in the life of a fantasy knight. The clothing, meals, and other details are reasonably accurate to the time.
- Communion -- During the course of the game, Merriya became a paladin. This story told the tale of her "conversion." The opening scene is derived from a scene from the previous story arc, where Merriya had spoken in a rather rude manner to a powerful dark sorcerer. This story was co-written with David Kuijt.
-
TAMARA VANE -- Tamara was written up for a supposed Kazei 5 game that never got off the ground. Although short, the story makes for a nice look at life in the Kazei 5 universe. Tamara herself was written up to resemble a low-end Major Motoko Kusanagi.
- TORI NISHI -- Nishi hails from 16th Century Japan, at the start of the Sengoku era. She is a ninja, who hides both her true nature (and her true sex) by disguising herself as simple male foot soldier. As she is included in my Ninja Hero book for HERO Games, I have removed her character sheet on the website.
-
- On the Run -- Nishi's first appearance. At this point, she was known as Rinzo and I called her a he, as only the GM and I knew Rinzo was a "she." As the story opens, "Rinzo" is fleeing the loosing side of a battle.
- Alone in the Dark -- Possibly my favorite story. This story was done in an effort to capture some of the flavor and feel of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo tales. By this point Nishi's secret is out and she is hurrying south to find the surviving members of her lord's house.
MICHAEL'S PAGE OF ANIME MSTINGS
Some time ago, I started writing MSTings for Shinji's Vault of Anime MSTings. The results were quite successful, and quite popular, winning me the 1999 Silver Mally for "Best Non-Standard MSTing Team." I have since retired from the field of MSTing, but for your amusement, I have gathered all of my MSTings here.
- Episode 1: Bubblegum Wars -- A New Loop 1
A crossover between Star Wars and Bubblegum Crisis? Actually, "A New Loop" isn't all that bad, it's just not that great. Mainly it suffers from errors in spelling, sentence structure and grammar. Oh, and the fact that large segments of the story seem to have been lifted right from Star Wars, with only the names and minor location details changed to protect the innocent. Of course, there is the obvious Self-Insertion Character (a rebel pilot) and the required developing romance between said pilot and Linna as well. I have never found the promised sequels, which might be a good thing. This was my first MSTing attempt.
(BGC/Star Wars; Mike, Crow, Tom)
- Episode 2: Bubblegum Wars -- A New Loop 2
(BGC/Star Wars; Mike, Crow, Tom)
- Episode 3: Bubblegum Wars -- A New Loop 3
(BGC/Star Wars; Mike, Crow, Tom)
- Episode 4: Oh, Brother
This is an Oh, My Goddess! story from an author that promised "some really good fan fiction!". Yeah, right. Here we meet Taruchi, who has to be one of the most obnoxious individuals ever. He blasts Keiichi, blasts Urd, wrecks the house, gets falling down drunk, and otherwise wrecks the world of Oh, My Goddess! something fierce.
(AMG!; Mike, Crow, Tom); Winner of a 1998 Silver Mally for "Worst New Character"
- Episode 5: Tales of the Red Knightsaber 1
The start of something bigger than I could have ever dreamed. Slightly uncomfortable with using Mike and the Bots, I decided to try a stunt used by another author and riff stories with characters of my own creation. So, I introduced Ling Ling Li, Marta Nys, Noriko Kobayashi, and Shion Nys, the ladies of Kazei 5
(my anime/cyberpunk campaign) and let them at it. Needless to say, the ladies became a massive hit and proved to be very popular over at Shinji's Vault of Anime MSTings.
Anyway, my first MSTing with this crew was of a terrible Bubblegum Crisis story. Bad spelling, bad plotting, lack of a coherent plot, cliche events (super-powerful psychic, Sylia's long-lost lover, Self-Insertion of the writer); the list goes on. There is a prequel of sorts that is just as bad. Anyway, this mess was three chapters long and helped set the stage for my further MSTings.
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 6: Tales of the Red Knightsaber 2
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 7: Tales of the Red Knightsaber 3
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 8: Akanes Deleryium 1
Another crossover. This one is from an author who is is very unrepentant about his inability to spell, or use coherent English for that matter. The plot, such as it is, involves Mara trying to set up Ranma (male) with Sayoko, and Toshi with Akane. Characters wander in and out of the plot constantly, and the author sticks in cute asides at the drop of a hat.
(AMG!/Ranma 1/2; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 9: A Typical Night at the Station
This story, which is fairly well-written but very silly, was the first lemon I tackled. It also set the stage for what could be the Kazei 5 specialty... lemon stories. Several people told me that the riffs read like a bunch of women really commenting on sex, which I thought was a great compliment. Anyway, the lemon was such as hit that I started to look for more.
(Dominion -- lemon; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 10: Akanes Deleryium 2
Part two of this story. It doesn't get any better and in fact, gets even more incoherent in spots.
(AMG!/Ranma 1/2; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 11: Coming of Munihausen 2
This fic is immense, and it is only part two of three parts. It was my first collaboration with my Kazei 5 characters and it shows. The sheer size if the fic made it hard to riff (at least as it was) and having only one person to write riffs for meant I missed a lot of comments. Jamie also cut out scenes, something I don't do (especially in lemons) which led to a lack of chances or Marta to really cut loose. Coming of Munihausen was latter reriffed by several people on SVAM (including the talented Alicia Ashby). Note: this fic is pretty bad and not for everyone!
(Sailor Moon/Overfiend; Mike, Crow, Tom, Marta)
- Episode 12: Go, AMP, Go!
How could I go wrong? A Silent Möbius story (my favorite manga) and a lemon to boot! I was in heaven! Then I read it. Oooggg... Yuck. I almost cut this, but decided to run with the scenes as presented. The end result was pretty good actually and is said to be very well done.
(Silent Möbius -- lemon; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 13: Babysitting & Tests of Fear
Here comes Koopa. The man(?) writes fics by the bucketful, churning out one page mini-epics that feature no plot, no characterization, no scenery, and action sequences that have to be read to be believed.
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 14: American Kitsune 6
My first encounter with the infamous David Gonterman. His "SMAK" series was part of an extended epic involving David Kintobor (aka David Gonterman) and his fight against Afrocentric history teachers, as well as his involvement with Mobius, Sonic, cybernetics, Sailor Moon, Power Rangers, white power, homophobia, censorship, and well... everything. David (or, as he calls himself: Davy-kins) pounds a conservative right-wing agenda with all the subtly of a tactical nuclear device.
(Sailor Moon/Other; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion); Winner of a 1999 Silver Mally for "Best Sailor Moon MSTing" and "Worst Fan Fic"
- Episode 15: Boba Fett Searches for the Seven Dragonballs
Not Koopa, but an amazing imitation. This short story cuts off with no warning, leaving one to wonder what was the point of it all.
(DBZ/Star Wars; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 16: American Kitsune 9
David's back. "SMAK" was riffed by several people, myself included, and touched off a massive flame war against Gonterman. Eventually the MSTing was yanked from SVAM. Gonterman himself swears that he is "better" now and has tried to have all traces of "SMAK" removed from the net.
(Sailor Moon/Other; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion); Winner of a 1999 Silver Mally for "Best Sailor Moon MSTing" and "Worst Fan Fic"
- Episode 17: Boy's Night
A Fatal Fury lemon starring Mai and her bouncing breasts. Actually, no. Mai's breasts get almost no mention (much to Marta's disappointment) but certain other body parts do, and at sizes that will make many shake their heads. This was (IMO) a very funny lemon. Note: it is uncut and has some scenes that may not be for everyone. Don't eat and read this!
(Fatal Fury -- lemon; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 18: Largo 2
The return of Koopa, with a two part Bubblegum Crisis story. As with everything Koopa, blink and you'll miss it.
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 19: A Furry Couple
Lemon time again. This one features that busty cat-girl Felica and is, well, oddly written (see the end of the MSTing for more on that). A reasonably funny MSTing that has everyone wondering what really happened to Noriko.
(Darkstalkers -- lemon, Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 20: Where's Ryoko?
Possibly the funniest thing I have ever done. Jamie and I combined to write a hilarious MSTing of a Tenchi Muyo! lemon that even the author liked! Marta makes Alexander's life a living hell, with riffs that have to be read to be believed!
(Tenchi Muyo! -- lemon, Alexander, Marta, Noriko); Runner up for a 1999 Silver Mally for "Best MSTed Fic"
- Episode 21: Chaos in Time
huge Sailor Moon crossover story written by multiple authors. More Senshi than anyone knows what to do with, a slew of fan created characters and plot inconsistencies that make you want to scream (or just chuck the whole thing).
(Sailor Moon -- Marta, Shion, Dan, Rebecca)
- Episode 22: Armageddon Prophecy 0
This fanfic has so many different series crossed over that one needs a scorecard to follow the action. It isn't my best MSTing, for various reasons, but turned out okay. I opted not to MST the rest after I found out someone had already tackled the series.
(Project A-ko/Ranma 1/2/Ronin Warriors/Sailor Moon/Tenchi Muyo!; Gadget Hackwrench, Mark 'Undertaker' Calloway, Shion, Urd)
- Episode 23: Relucatant Buma 1
Back to my old standby, Bubblegum Crisis. This fic features constant smarmy asides from the writer that irritate more than amuse. There is also the fact that the writer can't decide if he is playing this for yucks or not...
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 24: American Kitsune 10
The end of my involvement in "SMAK." I got so sick of Gonterman that I dumped the last chapter (11) and called it a day.
(Sailor Moon/Other; Samantha, Sara, Shion); Winner of a 1999 Silver Mally for "Best Sailor Moon MSTing" and "Worst Fan Fic"
- Episode 25: Bubblegum Shift 2
Another Bubblegum Crisis fic. This epic is from the guy who wrote Oh My God! and proves that he should stay away from cyberpunk. The Knight Sabers are obvious morons, the plot drags, the dialogue is stilted, and the action is pointless.
(BGC; Marta, Maya, Rebecca, Shion)
- Episode 26: Relucatant Buma 2
More from Mr. Aside. This seems to be funnier (IMO) than part 1, and turned out well once I finished it
(BGC; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Special: Dark SVAM
Someone wrote an anti-fic about the crew at SVAM! In order to riff this mess, Alicia set it up that certain authors were stuck in the satellite instead of Mike and the bots. The idea was to riff as yourself and not as someone else. The end result was very funny.
(Anti-fic; Alicia, Jamie, Michael, Tim)
- Episode 27: ShinAkuma V.S Vegeta
Streetfighter's Akuma decides to take on Vegita. Right. This story has no plot, scenes that drag on (or appear for no reason), pointless crossovers and Self Insertion. How could I go wrong? Oh, there are 6 more parts to this.
(Streetfighter II/DBZ/Other, Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Special 2: Bobby G's SVAM Anti-fic
Another anti-fic, this one is much crueler than the first. Once again certain SVAM authors are called upon to save the day!
(Anti-fic; Alicia, Jamie, Michael, Tim)
- Episode 28: ShinAkuma V.S Vegeta 2
Part two of this epic. It doesn't get any better trust me.
(Streetfighter II/DBZ/Other, Noriko, Rebecca, Shion, Tsuneo)
- Episode 29: Jerry Springer: When Past Guests Attack!
The Senshi on Jerry Springer. 'nuff said.
(Sailor Moon/Other, Alexander, Ling Ling, Marta, Samantha)
- Special 3: Dark SVAM 2
The end of the inital Dark SVAM fic. I show up as a near omnipotent general, while Jamie wigs out.
(Anti-fic; Alicia, Jamie, Michael, Tim)
- Episode 30: ShinAkuma V.S Vegeta 3
Part three of this mess. The story (if you could call it that) gets even more silly. The writing also starts to really fall apart. Oh, and Ling Ling has been fired due to lack of popularity.
(Streetfighter II/DBZ/Other, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 31: ShinAkuma V.S. Vegeta 4
And here is part four. Here the writing reaches new lows. Thane's accent (and existence) is questioned, Packard Bell's secret plans are revealed, and Akuma punts everyone around like they were ragdolls. Alexander shows up to help MST this mess and has Shion instantly latch onto him. Marta may never be the same....
(Streetfighter II/DBZ/Other, Alexander, Marta, Shion)
- Episode 32: We Are Going To Give You The Power
The ladies are hit with a spam attack! Some company offers some claims about marketing that make little sense. It may not be my best, but I was in a mood.
(Email Spam, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 33: Check and Mate
A BGC lemon that features... (wait for it...) Nene and Mackie. It is actually well-written and mostly in character, but some of the lines are so open for riffing that Marta goes crazy with the double entendres and innuendo.
(BGC -- lemon; Ling Ling, Marta, Noriko, Shion)
- Episode 34: Space Waltz, Parts 3 & 4
Ling Ling Li discovers contract obligations require to guest star at the Elmer Studios for a MSTing. The fare is a poorly contructed Cowboy Bebop fic in which no one has died and even the author admits her story doesn't have much of a plot.
(Dan, Ling Ling Li, Rebecca Bartley, Tango)
- Episode 35: Outlaw Bebop -- The Real Folk Blues
A crossover in which the author links the worlds of Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. Features utterly confusing fight scenes, no descriptions of anything what-so-ever, and an utter dislike for Twilight Suzuka.
This isn't a Kazei 5 MSTing like the others, but instead features Sarah K Ferrari (who might become Mike's regular "guest riffer" working at Elmer Studios.)
(Cowboy Bebop/Outlaw Star -- Dan, Rebecca Bartley, Sarah K Ferrari, Tsuneo Tateo)
- Episode 36: Sting, The Devil's Angel, Part 1
An Outlaw Star fic mixed with a small amount of Tenchi Muyo!. Sting is a part bio-andriod (errr...) Ctarl-Ctarl space pirate with a pet cabbit. In about three paragraphs, Sting had rendered almost all of the crew of the Outlaw Star obsolete, to to mention consigning Aisha Clan-Clan to fanfic oblivion...
(Outlaw Star -- Andriana, Rebecca Bartley, Sarah, Tango, Tsuneo Tateo)
- Episode 37: Sting, the Devil's Angel, Part 2
The return of Sting the Super Space Pirate Goth Ctarl-Ctarl Bio-Android (with a Punk Cabbit!). Yes, Sting is back, right in the middle of a plot to steal samples from various genetic engineering labs. Not one to mess around, Sting has the solution figured out in about 5 seconds... giving the rest of the crew plenty of time to tell her how great she is. Oh, and as is par for the course, our Super Space Pirate Goth Ctarl-Ctarl Bio-Android, not content with her meger lot in life, may end up a Genetically Enhanced Super Space Pirate Goth Ctarl-Ctarl Bio-Android before all is said and done. And not a moment too soon (this offer may be void in some states).
(Outlaw Star -- Rebecca Bartley, Sarah, Tango, Tsuneo Tateo)
