Mai Shuranui

Background/History: Mai Shiranui is one of the youngest members of the Shiranui Clan, an ages-old house of ninja who can trace their origins to Japan's Sengoku period (and beyond). As the demand for ninja has grown less and less with the passing years, the Clan has expanded their horizons, and are now involved in variety of business fields—such as medicine, fitness centers, and self-defense programs. All Clan members are expected to be both ninja and businessmen (or women), and to provide for the well being of the Clan as a whole. All except Mai....

Born with impressive pyrokinetic powers, Mai has always received preferential treatment from the rest of the Clan. Trained in the art of Shiranui-ryu ninjutsu, she has also received tutelage in using her pyrokinesis to augment her martial skill. Unfortunately, the idea that she is "special" has gone to Mai's head, with the result that she feels "above" the need to work for a living. To make matters worse, Mai's grandfather adores his granddaughter and has spoiled her rotten, allowing Mai to do as she pleases.

Currently Mai divides her time between training at the family estate and spending her time enjoying the Tokyo nightlife. Occasionally she's been called in by other Clan members to deal with threats of one sort of another (usually supernatural creatures and their ilk), and uses such instances to show off her prowess and to demonstrate why her excesses are to be tolerated.

Personality/Motivation: Mai has one major aim in life, to have as much fun as possible. She knows that with her pyrokinetic powers she'll never have to do any real work, so she spends her time training in ninjutsu, exercising, working on her tan, and partying at Tokyo hotspots. The family fortune means that she never wants for spending money, so Mai is bound and determined to "live it up while it lasts." The rest of the clan takes a dim view of her actions, and wish for her to become more involved in the Clan's business dealings, but Mai ignores them with her characteristic insolence.

Primarily, Mai wants to have a good time, and doesn't want to have to deal with the harsh realities of the real world. Accordingly her friendships and love life are fairly shallow affairs, with an emphasis on instant gratification, as opposed to any real meaning. Living for the here-and-now, Mai makes and discards friends and lovers constantly, without ever settling down.

Although she is a party girl through-and-through, Mai is surprisingly dedicated to her martial training. Her reasons are practical ones, however, as she recognizes the value of her training in keeping her fit and her figure at the peak of perfection. She also enjoys using her pyrokinetic abilities, and has been known to use both powers and martial skills to discourage unwanted attention while out at a Tokyo nightclub.

Powers/Tactics: In a fight Mai has two main goals: win, and look good doing it. She likes showy moves and will pose when possible if there is a crowd gathered. However, she's no fool and won't waste time playing to any onlookers if her opponent obviously tough and powerful.

Against more human foes, Mail will use her warfans, usually placing her Combat Skill Levels into her DCV, and wearing them down with her Elbow/Knee Strikes and Legsweeps. Monsters will be introduced to her Dragon's Breath and Dragon's Fury attacks, while Mai's Flaming Dragon dance is saved for large groups or as a showy "finishing move."

Mai's flame attacks are projected from her hands (usually channeled along one of her warfans), while her Dragon Dance blasts out in all directions from her body. Mai usually goes into a spin when she fires off her Dragon Dance, whipping the trailing end of her costume around in a tight circle to further spread the flames. Although Mai herself is fairly immune to heat and fire, her clothing isn't, and extended use of her power (or contact with open flame) may just incinerate anything she’s wearing.

Appearance: Mai Shiranui, aged 22, stands 5'7", with an athletic, yet well proportioned, build. Her eyes are dark brown, while her long hair is a dark reddish-black. Proud of her figure, Mai likes to show it off, and tends to dress provocatively, with a tendency for clothing that is low-cut, tight, transparent, short, or any combination thereof. Her "fighting clothes" change regularly, as she likes to include trailing sashes and the like in her costume, which usually end up catching fire if she uses her powers. But no matter what Mai wears, it tends to be bright red with white or gold trim, and revealingly cut. She also wears armor plate on her lower legs and forearms, to protect her limbs while performing blocks and strikes.

Designer's Notes: The original Mai Shiranui is a prime example of pure fanservice at its best (or worse, depending on how you look at it). She doesn't wear a lot, and tends to lose her clothing at the drop of a hat (so to speak). She's also a bit brainless and empty-headed, unlike a number of other popular video fighting game females. I selected Mai for inclusion in my Phenomena Department campaign mainly on the strength of her "Flaming Dragon Dance," which looks pretty cool when animated. The material here is loosely based off of the original video game Mai, but most I made up whole cloth for my own campaign.

Being a video game character, Mai normally would use chi energy. I made her a pyrokinetic as my campaign doesn't use anime-styled chi energy, at least not the way its used in video games.

Those who wish to use Mai may want to increase her DEX, CON, and SPD to bring her more in line with her video game and anime capabilities. I suggest upping her DEX to 24, her CON to 20, and her SPD to 5. Game Masters can then season the rest of her powers to taste based on campaign needs.
