Nicholas Angel from Hot Fuzz

Background/History: Nicholas Angel is the Metropolitan Police Service’s top officer. Born in London, by his own admission he can’t remember a time when he didn’t want to be a police officer (except for a time in the summer of 1979 when he wanted to be Kermit the Frog). Much of this desire stems from his Uncle Derek, who was a sergeant in the Met, and bought young Nicholas a police pedal car when he was five. Nicholas states that driving around his neighborhood in the car instilled in him a clear sense of right and wrong, and molded his ideas about the law and what it means.

Graduating from Canterbury University in 1993 with a double major in politics and sociology, Nicholas then attended Hendon College of Police Training, where he showed remarkable aptitude in field exercises, riot control, and urban pacification. Academically, his theoretically coursework was excellent and he virtually aced his final exams, graduating with distinction and being awarded the Baton of Honor.

Upon joining the Metropolitan Police Service, he displayed great effectiveness and popularity in the local community, and was eventually promoted to the SO19 Armed Response Team. Since then he’s been awarded a Bravery Award, nine special commendations in the last year, has an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer, and has been injured three times in the line of duty.

Personality/Motivation: Although a stellar officer, Nicholas Angel is also a man obsessed. To him, his job is his life and his life is his job. He’s had a few romantic relationships, but for the most part he lives, breathes, and sleeps police work. He is also a strict and almost uncompromising upholder of the law, best illustrated in a scene where he finds a number of underage drinkers at the local pub. After being told they are allowed to drink to keep them off of the streets (and out of trouble), he replies: “Well, that’s as maybe, but the law’s the law and they’ll have to go.”

Nicholas also understands that in order to be an effective police officer, you need to work all sides of an issue, or as he puts it: “Police work is as much about preventing crime as it is about fighting crime.” He is a stickler for proper paperwork, the taking of accurate notes (he says his notebook is his most important weapon), and paying attention to everything happening around him.

Quote: "I may not be a man of God, Reverend, but I know right from wrong, and I have the good grace to know which is which."

Powers/Tactics: It seems there’s little Nicholas can’t do, and even less he can’t do effectively. Aside from his police training, he’s taken courses in advanced driving and cycling, practices Olympic fencing and judo, plays chess (specifically ‘speed chess’), and is said to be an expert marksman. He backs all of this up with a clear understanding of the law, a keen intellect, and a sharp eye.

If involved in an altercation, Nicholas prefers a measured response. He’ll give a lawbreaker a chance to surrender peacefully, and then respond accordingly. He’s chased down fleeing suspects on foot, shot a man armed with a Kalashnikov, and successfully defended himself from a man armed with a sword through the use of his police issue tonfa. Even in the midst of a gunfight he tries to avoid outright killing people, aiming for the legs and shoulders, or shooting at various supporting objects (chains, straps, and the like) in order to use the landscape against his opponents.

Appearance: Nicholas Angel is of average height, with a lean, but strong build. He keeps his blond hair trimmed short and is clean shaven. On duty he wears the regulation uniform (including tactical vest), off duty he wears casual clothing.

Designer's Notes: Nicholas Angel appears in the film Hot Fuzz, a hilarious send-up of American action films by the creators of Shawn Of The Dead. He’s pretty much as presented, a straight-laced police officer who upholds the law with fierce determination. Based on how he appeared in the movie, Nicholas may seem a little light with regards to his Characteristics, but he wasn’t that much faster than most people. However, he was hard to put down (hence his 18 CON), and took a gunshot with little effect (Combat Luck).

Game Masters can use Nicholas as a model for similar characters, or simply have him come to their campaign town for a bit of cross-training. If you need to make him tougher, up his STR to 15, his DEX to 18, and his SPD to 4. You can also season his CSLs to taste.
