Background/History: A former CIA field agent, Bryan Mill’s dedicated service to his country cost him his wife Lenore, who divorced him after spending far too many evenings alone wondering if the next knock on the door would be someone telling her Bryan would never be coming back. After retiring from active service, Bryan decided to try renewing his relationship with his daughter Kim, an effort made rather difficult due to the wealth of Lenore’s new husband, Stuart. Still, he does what he can, and hopes to parley a favor from pop-star Sheerah into a audition for Kim, who wants to become a singer herself.
Personality/Motivation: Having seen the world’s seamy underbelly, Bryan has no illusions about how dangerous it can be. Not even Paris is a “safe” place in his eyes, especially not for a 17 year-old American girl traveling abroad for the first time in her life. At the same time, this has made him highly overprotective, at least in the eyes of his ex-wife Lenore, who warns him that not letting go of Kim will mean he’ll lose her forever. So he assents to allowing Kim to travel to Paris, but only after setting up certain conditions—call him upon landing and each night, and always carry with her the cell phone Bryan has supplied.
As Kim means the world to Bryan, he will stop at nothing to get her back once she’s been kidnapped by Albanian slavers. He states as such to Jean-Claude Pitrel, threatening to topple Eiffel Tower if thats what it takes. Fortunately for Kim, Bryan hasn’t let any of his old skills decay. It’s a mark of his preparedness that he keeps a suitcase, complete with multiple passports, money, and recording equipment packed, just in case. Curiously, when confronted with the extent of the Albanian crime ring, Bryan seems unconcerned, ignoring all of the other victims unless they can direct him to his daughter. While he shows some sadness and concern at the death of Kim’s friend Amanda, the fate of the rest of the kidnapped women doesn’t seem to concern him.
Quote: “I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
Powers/Tactics: His time as a CIA field agent has made Bryan a highly dangerous man to cross. As his quote promises, he does find the men responsible for kidnapping his daughter and he does kill them. However, he doesn’t randomly smash his way across Paris till he finds that he wants. He starts by using his numerous Contacts built up over his career, learning about his enemy while he examines the crime scene for clues. Once pointed in the right direction, he works his way up the food chain, using a combination of subterfuge, surveillance, and brutal violence to accomplish his goals.
When involved in a fight Bryan will usually Block, then respond quickly with a Counterstrike. If his foe is staggered, he’ll use precision strikes (knife hands to the throat, strikes to the groin, kicks to the knee) to put his foe down and out. An armed opponent will be quickly Disarmed, either through strikes to the weapon arm, or through more brutal methods involving joint breaking techniques. If armed himself, Bryan aims to kill as quickly as possible, using his Double Tap technique to put down most men with a quick burst of gunfire. At the same time, Bryan attempt to maximize his attack my aiming for vital areas—such as the head, neck, or center of the chest.
Appearance: Bryan Mills stands 6’4” with a lean muscular build. His dark hair is kept short and he tends to dress in “business casual” attire.
Designer's Notes: Bryan Mills is the central figure of the European active movie Taken. The character sheet is based directly on what he’s seen to do in the unrated extended edition, with several of his quotes used to illustrate his various skills. In truth, the character sheet is incomplete, as it doesn’t really take in to account the rest of his presumed skills. That said, Bryan is still quite an effective character, although GM’s might want to give him some levels with Interactive Skills as well as some defensive Presence.
Bryan’s martial arts are rather extensive, based as they are on things he was seen to do during the movie. The style, “Kapour” is supposed to be the name of the style according to a Liam Neeson interview. It might also be Krav Maga, Nagasu Do, Wing Chun, or something else. Odds are, its a synthesis of various styles, blended together to look good on film. Game Masters might want to remove similar maneuvers and should also keep in mind individual maneuvers might actually represent various similar techniques (this is very true of the Strike).
