The Griffin

Ecology: The griffin is found in India and Arabia, although some reports place it far north in Scythia. They prey on horses, which they hate, and are strong enough to carry one away to their lair. They will also devour a human if given the chance, and it is said they take the corpses of men back to their nests to feed their young.

Griffins line their nests with gold, which they dig up out of the ground. They guard their nests jealously, however, and getting at this gold is not an easy task. Griffin nests are often attacked by the Arimaspians, a one-eyed race of men, who are in search of the gold themselves.

The griffin is also know by the following names: Grifes, Griffin, Gryphon.

Personality/Motivation: Normal animal motivations. Griffins detest horses, and will often attack horses on sight. They also will attack anyone attempting to plunder their nests of gold. As the griffins will tear to pieces anyone who tries to raid their nests, griffins are said to symbolize punishment of humans who are greedy and overly love riches and material wealth.

Powers/Tactics: A griffin attacks with its long eagle's claws and sharp beak. They prefer aerial attacks and will often swoop down onto prey.

It is thought a griffin's claws can be used to detect poison, changing color in its presence. Aside from gold, griffin nests are also thought to be lined with agate, which has medicinal uses, emeralds, and jasper.

Appearance: A griffin is a large creature with the body of a lion and the head, breast, wings, and forelegs of an eagle. The coloration of this creature varies. Normally the lion-like hindquarters are tawny-brown, while the feathered front can be white, brown, or even blue. One description states the feathers on the griffin's back are black, on its front are red, the wings are white, and its neck is blue.

Designer's Notes: The griffin is one of the oldest of fantastical creatures, having originated in ancient Egypt. They were often associated with the sun and drew the chariots of the Greek gods Apollo and Nemesis. In the Middle Ages, the griffin came to symbolize both the Devil and Christ. When used to signify Christ, the griffin was given golden feathers, representing divinity, and the lion half was colored a pinkish-red, to symbolize Christ's human nature.
