Ecology: The Bone Snatcher has only been seen in the heart of Nmib Desert in central Africa.Long ago this region was a tropical jungle dominated by a particularly aggressive species of army ant. The change in climate has stranded the Bone Snatcher in a sandy desolate wasteland far from water, prey, and civilization. As a result most of the hive spends a considerable amount of time in a sleepless, motionless hibernation. Recent excavations by diamond miners have exposed access to the queen, forcing the hive to search for a new, secluded nesting spot.

Personality/Motivation: Tribal Legends speak of the Bone Snatchers as having an Immortal Queen, who has existed since before the Dinosaurs and will exist long after the fall of Man. They say she grows strong and immortal by feasting upon the marrow of mens bones. When the Tribesmen find a victim of hers, the flesh stripped from a raw skeleton, they smash the bones with rocks and clubs, to prevent her coming back to haunt and hunt them as a Bone Walker.

The Hive builds a complex nest in a dark cool place with miles of long reaching tunnels. The majority of the hive carpets the area nearest the Queen, guarding and protecting her and collecting the endless stream of new offspring that she births. The rest scout and hunt for prey, rarely bothering to form a Bone Walker, unless under orders from the Queen.

Powers/Tactics: A Swarm of Bone Snatchers will stalk any prey that enters its territory, attempting to catch an individual or group unawares. It can easily envelope and devour most animals within moments. In its Bone Walker Form it tends to charge opponents, smashing its self into a victim and then devouring them.

When carrying the Queen to a new location a single Bone Walker will travel quickly down a wide path of scuttling, slower moving Bone Snatchers. If possible it will have a retinue of other Bone Walkers patrolling the area to ensure the queens safety.

Appearance: A crawling mass of gleaming black ants, the individual Bone Snatchers are half an inch long, incredibly fast and possess large, powerful jaws. They clack their jaws together with menace when attacking. They cover surfaces like a carpet and can strip flesh from bones in an instant. A swarm will try to attack by surprise, perhaps tunneling up under sleeping prey.

The Queen of the Bone Snatcher ants has evolved into a pulsing mass of reproductive functions and advanced insectile intelligence. The size of a football (3 BODY, 1 PD/ 1 ED) she is far too heavy for her minions to easily carry... ordinarily. After her minions have stripped a corpse of its flesh, and brought back to her the choicest bits, she may order them to swarm around the victims bones. Using this skeletal structure the ants form a strange Bone Walker. Composed of gleaming black ants and bare bones, this construct is much more mobile, capable of scouting for a new nest site and carrying the queen to it. The queen has dozens, possibly hundreds of swarms of ants at her command, each with the potential to form a Bone Walker.

To prevent the hive spreading, regional tribesmen have erected warning posts, long poles bearing threatening carvings of the head of a Bone Snatcher. As long as the Hive isn't endangered, it will stay mostly dormant for decades, perhaps even centuries.

Designer's Notes: Based upon the SciFi/Horror flick titled The Bone Snatcher.

Deep in the desert, a trail of bones leads to an unstoppable killer that murders its victims by devouring their flesh!
