Ecology: When a nuclear weapon detonates it doesn’t totally consume all of its human victims in atomic fire. A portion—a small portion—of each person’s soul remains behind. And thus a nuclear shade is born.
Nuclear shades tend to haunt the area where their human body died, often gathering in great packs to seek and flesh (in any form) to feed on. Immune to the passage of time, they can denude an area of all life before eventually moving on to fresh hunting ground. The bulk of nuclear shades are found in Japan, although some are known to exist in China, Russia, and the USA.
Personality/Motivation: Although of human intelligence (and even able to speak, albeit haltingly), a nuclear shade’s needs are fairly basic—feed. They seek flesh, normally human, but animal will do if that’s all there is, and will use their Rad Burn ability to virtually melt if off the bones of their victims.
Powers/Tactics: A nuclear shade tends to remain invisible (and thus virtually intangible), until it closes in a potential victim. Once within range, the shade will become solid, Grab its target, and then give it a “kiss” with its Rad Burn power. At the same time, it’s radioactive form will irradiate both the victim and surrounding area, sickening anyone the Rad Burn doesn’t kill out right. Once the target is dead, the sated shade will turn invisible and start to search for a new victim.
Appearance: A nuclear shade is a roughly human-sized and human-shaped cloud of vapor. The cloud is lit from within and glows in dim conditions. The form fades to nothingness at the extremities, while the eyes are bright points of golden light, while the mouth is a black hole. Although capable of vanishing from sight, nuclear shades are easily detectable via Geiger Counters.
Designer's Notes: The Nuclear Shade appears in the Feng Shui supplement Blowing Up Hong Kong. I derived many of the secondary powers from various undead in Monsters, Minions, and Marauders, while the radiation powers themselves are built based off of ideas seen in the UNTIL Superpowers Database.
