Ecology: Chthonians live deep underground, moving through the crust as if it were water. They live nearly a 1000 years, don't need to breath, and avoid water at all costs. Chthonians do breed, and occasionally come near the surface to deposit their eggs (which look like somewhat like geodes). Chthonian young are only about the size of a large earthworm and can't tolerate extreme heat. As they grow larger, they migrate further down into the planet's crust.

Personality/Motivation: The exact motivations behind the chthonians are unknown. They tend to frequent a city called "G'harne", found in western Africa. It is unknown if they built this city, or it was built to worship them and Shudde M'ell, the largest chthonian on Earth. Chthonians are highly protective of their young, however, and the surest way to rouse them to action is to collect eggs or harm infant chthonians.

Shudde M'ell himself is said to be a chthonian of immense in size. It is also believed he was trapped under G'harne at one point, but is now free to roam as he pleases.

Powers/Tactics: Chthonians can call upon an wide number of powers if needed. They communicate via telepathy and can control other species if desired. If given enough time, a chthonian can locate an individual human anywhere on the planet's surface. They also can communicate to each other by telepathy and can talk to each other regardless of range or location. A chthonian will use their Mind Control to bind a person to a specific spot, restricting the target's movement until they can burst up out of the ground. In direct combat, the chthonian will either attempt to crush a number of targets under its body (by simply falling on its targets), or grab a victim with a tentacle, burrowing into the victim's body and draining blood and other vital fluids.

Appearance: A chthonian is a enormous squid-like creature. It has a long tapering body and a thick cluster of tentacles at one end. These creatures are usually coated with slime, are grayish-black in color and are often accompanied by a chanting noise when they appear.

Designer's Notes: I will have to admit that I always get chthonian mixed up with Cthulhu, but that's besides the point. The chthonian is a creature of the Cthulhu Mythos of H.P. Lovecraft. This design was based upon the chthonian presented in the 5th Edition of Call of Cthulhu. As with many other Call of Cthulhu write ups, this should be considered just a rough template for a final character design. Skills and spells are possible, as are variations in size, DEF, DEX, INT, EGO, and other powers. Shudde M'ell himself is huge, with a 75 (or better) STR and other stats to match. He can also cause immense earthquakes all by himself (somewhere in the range of 100 STR TK). Note that water is highly toxic to these creatures and in a superhero game they might fall a lot faster than the GM wishes to any water-using hero.
