HISTORY

The Watcher in the Water is a monstrous, many-tentacled beast that lives in a lake created by the damming of the Sirannon and situated in front of the West Gate of Moria. It attacks passersby at the direction of the Lord of Moria, the Balrog. The Watcher's tentacles are green, luminous and slimy.

The Watcher attacks with its powerful tentacles, attempting to seize its victims and either drown them or draw them in to its massive maw, where it can deliver a deadly bite.

During the War of the Ring, the Watcher had a slightly different task: to drive the Fellowship into Moria. It attacked, but let them go when they ran for the West Gate, and slammed it closed behind them.

NOTES

1. Tolkien never states that the Watcher works directly for the Balrog. This is a supposition of mine that seems to be supported by some fairly solid evidence. The creature undoubtedly has at least some low cunning, as seen by its deliberate act of closing the gate behind the Fellowship.
