Background: I'm not going to disseminate on the entire series, here. :) Tamahome was living a hand-to-mouth kind of life, doing what he could to scam and con and work up his fortune--although nearly all of it goes to his family, to support them. He is also something of a hero around the Imperial City, doing what he can to discourage the slave gangs, and the like.
Which is how he meets Yui and Miaka. The two girls are set upon by a slave gang, and Tamahome is there to save them. Although they have no money, much to his disappointment, they intrigue him. Yui is sent home, but Miaka remains—and Tamahome decides to bodyguard her, for whatever reason he can rationalize it with... and thus begins the story of Fushigi Yuugi—the Mysterious Play.
Personality: Tamahome is confident, cool, and smooth, except where two things are concerned: his family, and Miaka. Although he is seen as a money-grubber and a greedy man, the truth of the matter is, he is supporting a family of one parent and seven other children, and that's the reason for his money grubbing.
On to Miaka. Miaka makes him feel all sorts of things he's never felt before. Chief amongst those feelings are love and lust. His love for Miaka wars with the fact that he is—or was, before Miaka—a 'second class' citizen, not worthy of Suzaku no Miko. His desire to prove himself as a worthy has led him into many sticky situations, but with the help of his friends he's gotten out of most of them.
Powers/Skills Quite simply, Tamahome is an uber-martial artist along the lines of Ranma Saotome. He isn't that intelligent, and he doesn't have loads of supernatural powers, but those powers he does have are quite impressive when put to the test. This is Tamahome right around the end of the first story-arc, into the early twenties episodes, after Taiitsu-kun gives them their powerups.
Note that Tamahome has an -insane- amount of Martial Arts. This is to represent the fact that he is, in the series, quite simply the best physical fighter there is, along with Nakago, who's on the other side. I didn't really have any better way to represent this; he's supposed to be that skilled, although I suppose I could cut some of the maneuvers out and up the Combat Skill Levels. He doesn't normally use weapons but we've seen him use a flail-type weapon, and a sword.
On Tamahome's Seishi powerup. That is to represent the power he gets when he -really- powers up (i.e. when he confronts Suboshi). If he is Berserk he will immediately activate the powerup as well. Fortunately, this has only happened once in the anime... and Nuriko was able to get to him, after he'd disposed of Suboshi but before he'd killed him.
Appearance: Tamahome is a young man—still in his teens—but is quite obviously attractive, garnering both Yui and Miaka's attentions throughout the series. His blue-grey hair works well with his eyes and he keeps in shape—quite good shape.
